Atlanta Permaculture Action Day w/ Lead to Life

April 7, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Location Change!: Mena's Farm, 544 Elmwood Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30318

Join us for a Permaculture Action Day at Mena’s Farm, an urban organic farm in Northwest Atlanta, in collaboration with Lead to Life on Saturday, April 7th from 10 am until 5 pm.  RAIN OR SHINE!

This event is a collaboration between Permaculture Action Network and Lead to Life in honor of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination.

We will be commemorating 50 years since the day of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination with the King Center starting on April 4th and going through April 9th. Lead to Life will be melting down guns and turning them into shovels with which we’ll plant trees and garden beds throughout the city. 50 guns; 50 shovels; 50 trees. This will also be the beginning of Lead to Life’s 50 tree plantings throughout the weekend using shovels that will be caste from melted down guns at an alchemical ceremony in Atlanta just the night before.

Mena’s Farm is tended by Filomena Andrade, a mother of three, grandmother, and lifetime farmer who arrived in Atlanta in 2007. She moved to Bankhead from Cape Verde, West Africa. Her farm is a thriving paradise of plants she built by hand on a run-down street in the heart of Atlanta’s Bankhead neighborhood.

Bring your friends and come prepared to learn new skills, build food-producing systems, and have a dirty, good time. This event is FREE and all are welcome to attend! We’ll have community lunch and water available for everyone throughout the day, but please bring a potluck dish or beverage to contribute if you like! Don’t forget your reusable dishware too!

Music and workshops will be happening throughout the day. Raury invites you to Come To The Woods, members of Rising Appalachia Music will be swinging through, Mara Hruby is coming by sharing a few words on mental health, empathy, and kindness. Terrence is throwing down. We are blessed!

We will be graced by Abbey of Gangstas to Growers to ground us with a few words on Food Justice, Accountability, and Community. You all better get ready to get your mushroom on… William Padilla Brown will be teaching a workshop on Low-Tech Mushroom-Cultivation. You all ready?!

Projects will include:

  •  planting fruit trees using shovels made from melted down weapons
  •  roofing and mending the chicken coop
  •  installing retaining walls
  •  fixing the greenhouse
  •  building raised garden beds
  •  installing rainwater storage barrels and irrigation
  • weeding, mulching and more!

After opening in circle together, we’ll get into the other hands-on projects for the day listed above. Around 1pm, as hands-on projects continue to be worked on, we’ll start the music and free workshops that you can join if you’re feeling it.
